Best VPN for Hulu

Best VPN for Hulu

Summary: Hulu has become one of the most popular networks and services for streaming the latest TV shows and movies, but not all the content is available around the world.

Due to licensing and copyright agreements, Hulu is forced to limit access to certain types of content to people who are connecting through the country that the content was created in.

If you find that some of your favorite TV shows and movies have been blocked because of your geolocation, you can bypass restrictions by connecting to Hulu through a Virtual Private Network.

VPN services allow you to connect through a server in a different country before connecting to Hulu, and make it simple to bypass geolocation-based content restrictions.

Why You Should Trust Us

At SecureThoughts, we have worked tirelessly to bring together a team of writers and researchers that pride themselves on staying at the forefront of internet technology and security.

Our only goal is to help our readers protect themselves while they are connected to the internet, and bypass restrictions that keep them from accessing their favorite sites and services.

Testing Methodology

Every VPN service that is currently available likes to claim that they are the best in the business, but most of the services making those claims are full of marketing hype.

To help you figure out where you should be spending your money and avoid subscribing to low-quality VPN services, we’re testing every service available against each other to find a clear winner.

How We Tested Each VPN Service

To ensure you can access your favorite TV shows and movies through Hulu even when they’ve been restricted in your location, we tested 170 VPNs using a three-step elimination process.

To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.

Our eliminations began by removing services from our list that are primarily based in countries that participate in the invasive surveillance program known as “14 Eyes.”

We continued eliminating services by verifying that the features of each remaining service are sufficient for helping our readers access restricted content on Hulu.

Then, we browsed through third-party websites to check reviews from past and current customers, and eliminated services that have consistently earned a poor reputation in the industry.

Finally, our review process ended by taking any services still on our list and comparing them against each other using five criteria to help us make a final determination on the best VPN for Hulu.

Those criteria are:

  • Price
  • Setup Process
  • Ease of Use
  • Speed
  • Customer Service

Below are the results of our elimination and review process.

VPN Services You Should Avoid

Starting our review process with more than 170 different VPN services, we’ve eliminated any service that participates in the “14 Eyes” program to help dwindle down the list.

If you’re not already aware, the 14 Eyes program is an invasive surveillance program that governments use to force internet service providers to track your activity on their network.

Of the original 173 services, 123 have been eliminated due to their participation in the invasive 14 Eyes surveillance program.

IPPredator, ChillGlobal and GoVPN are three examples of services that participate in 14 Eyes that we’ve eliminated.

VPNs Disqualified Due to Missing Features

To help you find the best VPN service for accessing restricted content on Hulu, we’ve continued eliminating services that do not provide the features you will need.

Criteria #1: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer

Streaming high-definition video content through services like Hulu requires you to use a significant amount of bandwidth, so you need a service that provides unlimited bandwidth.

Services that will drop your upload and download speeds or become unreliable when you transfer large amounts of data have been eliminated from our review.

Celo and Cloak are two examples of services that we’ve eliminated due to their bandwidth and data consumption policies.

Criteria #2: Support for Multiple Operating Systems

Hulu is compatible with multiple different operating systems, which means you need a VPN service that provides software that is compatible with the same operating systems.

We’ve also eliminated services that provide software that isn’t compatible, causes malfunctions or becomes buggy and unreliable with today’s major operating systems.

SunVPN and IntelliVPN are two services that have been eliminated because the software they provide isn’t compatible with multiple different mainstream operating systems.

Criteria #3: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections

Many people find themselves streaming their favorite TV shows and movies using multiple different devices, which means you need a VPN service that allows you to open multiple connections.

VPN services that limit your connection speeds or your account access when you attempt to connect with multiple devices have been eliminated from our review process.

IBVPN and HotVPN are two examples of services that we’ve eliminated because they do not allow multiple active connections.

Criteria #4: No Peer2Peer Blocking

Hulu uses Peer2Peer filesharing technology to deliver the content that you’re attempting to watch, which means you need a service that doesn’t block Peer2Peer technology.

VPN services that block your access to Peer2Peer filesharing networks and services that utilize the same technology have been eliminated from our review.

LibertyVPN is one of the services that blocks access to Peer2Peer technology and has been eliminated from our review.

Criteria #5: Free Trials, Refunds and Money-Back Guarantee

In today’s competitive industry, VPN services that do not offer a free-trial period or at least a valid refund policy are considered unacceptable.

Any VPN service on our list that does not offer a refund policy or a free-trial period has been eliminated to ensure you can test a new service if you have problems that we did not experience.

VPNBaron and VPN Shield are two services that have been eliminated due to a lack of a free-trial period or a refund policy.

VPNs Eliminated Due to Poor Reviews

When customers are planning to make a purchase, they will use third-party review websites to help verify that the company they are subscribing to is legitimate and trustworthy.

That’s why we used the same third-party customer review websites to that verify any service remaining on our list has not developed a poor reputation, and eliminated those with consistently low ratings.

Top Three VPNs for Hulu

After starting with our original list of 170+ VPN services, we’ve managed to dwindle that list down to a total of three remaining services, each vying to receive our #1 recommendation.

Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:

  • Price
  • Setup Process
  • Ease of Use
  • Speed
  • Customer Service

We’ve taken each of the remaining three VPN services and compared them against each other in an extended review process to determine which provider is best for Hulu subscribers.

#1 ExpressVPN  (9.5 / 10) – The Best VPN Service for Hulu

When you want to access restricted content on Hulu and keep yourself safe while you’re connected to the internet, ExpressVPN offers the best service.

In terms of pricing, ExpressVPN falls towards the middle of the pack, which allows them to remain competitive while still devoting a significant amount of resources to their network.

If you find yourself having issues with the service ExpressVPN provides, their customer support team was helpful in their responses and answered our requests quickly in most cases.

During speed tests, we did not experience any reliability issues or connection slowdowns, even while streaming high-definition video content across multiple active connections.

The ExpressVPN software is easy to configure and makes it simple to connect to their network. We didn’t experience any issues while opening or maintaining a connection to their servers.

There were two areas where we did have concerns with the ExpressVPN service. In one instance, we waited up to three hours for a response to our customer support inquiry.

When speed tests were performed through servers based in Australia ExpressVPN performed slightly slower than our #2 pick, which could have been due to the time of day.

Summary: When your favorite TV shows and movies have been blocked because of licensing and copyright restrictions, you need to use a VPN service to bypass the blocks.

ExpressVPN is the best service currently available for helping you bypass content restrictions on Hulu and access your favorite TV shows and movies.

#2 IPVanish  (7.5 / 10)  Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You

There could be situations you find yourself in, or hardware that you’re working with, where ExpressVPN won’t function properly and you need an alternative solution, like IPVanish.

IPVanish is one of the lowest priced VPN services that we’ve tested. They charge $4.87 per month when you pay for 12 months in advance, or $7.50 per month for single-month subscriptions.

The software that you use to connect to the IPVanish network is easy to download, install and configure, and we were connected to their network within a few minutes of subscribing.

They do support multiple active connections, and we streamed high-definition video content while connected to their network with multiple devices at the same time.

ExpressVPN outperformed IPVanish in nearly every area, but one area where they were clearly separated is in the customer support department. It took IPVanish longer to respond to our requests.

We also noticed lagging and buffering while streaming HD video content on multiple different devices, suggesting that the ExpressVPN network is stronger than the IPVanish network.

Summary: Even though ExpressVPN outperformed IPVanish in nearly every area, there may be times that ExpressVPN is unavailable or will not work for you.

For times like those, IPVanish offers a similar experience, and we were able to use them to bypass Hulu’s content restrictions to stream high-definition video content.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10)  Not Recommended

Even though HideMyAss ranked third on our list of recommendations, we are not recommending them as a viable service for Hulu subscribers.

The only area that we didn’t have issues with their service is the software that they provide with your subscription that you’ll use to connect to their network.

Once connected to their network, our problems began and persisted throughout our entire testing process. We experienced numerous dropped connections and slow, unreliable connection speeds.

The pricing that HideMyAss offers is some of the most expensive that we’ve encountered. They charge $16.99 per month and $9.29 per month when you pay for a 12-month subscription.

As we experienced problems with their service, we contacted their customer support team and were forced to wait more than 24 hours to receive a response to our inquiries.

We attempted to perform speed tests while streaming HD video content, and were unable to establish a reliable connection to their servers, making it impossible to run accurate tests.

Summary: While testing the HideMyAss service, we were plagued with problems during the entire process, which makes it difficult to recommend them as a solution to Hulu subscribers.

If you want to bypass restrictions that Hulu has put in place and access your favorite video content, ExpressVPN provides a substantially better experience.

Wrapping It Up

If you’ve found that your favorite TV shows and movies have been restricted on Hulu because of licensing and copyright agreements, you need to connect to Hulu through a VPN service.

Virtual Private Network services help you bypass these content restrictions by allowing you to connect to a server in a country where the restrictions are not in place.

During our elimination process and when testing the few remaining VPNs, we concluded that ExpressVPN is the best VPN service for helping Hulu subscribers bypass these restrictions.
