Best VPN for Windows 10

Best VPN for Windows 10

Summary: Windows 10 is quickly becoming the most popular Windows release to date, and is being shipped with more new computers than ever.

Even though Windows 10 is one of the easiest operating systems to use, it comes with inherent problems that most people aren’t aware of, or are unable to fix.

While Windows 10 is great for getting you up and running, connected to the internet and using your favorite software and games quickly, there are security risks built into the OS.

Hackers are beginning to dissect the operating system to find those flaws, and are using the flaws to their advantage to steal your sensitive and personal information.

If you want to protect yourself from hackers while you’re using Windows 10, you will need to connect through a Virtual Private Network service.

VPN services secure your connection by encrypting any information that’s sent and received to and from your computer, and by hiding your original location so hackers cannot track you.

 Why You Should Trust Us

At SecureThoughts, we have put writing and researching teams in place that have devoted significant portions of their lives to staying up-to-date in the internet security and technology industries.

It is our goal to take everything that we have learned over the years to help our readers overcome problems they’re having with technology and internet security.

Testing Methodology

When it comes to the VPN industry, there are more than 170 services available. Each service makes claims that they are the best in the business.

To help ensure you’re getting the best service and aren’t buying into marketing hype we’re going to help you find the best VPN service for Windows 10 computers and tablets.

How We Tested Each VPN Service

To help ensure your Windows 10 computer is protected while it’s connected to the internet, we’ve tested more than 170 different VPN services.

To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.

Our elimination process began by removing services on our list that are based in countries where the local government can force the service to track your network activity.

We’ve looked through the features that each of the services on our list offer to their subscribers, and eliminated services that do not offer the features we believe Windows 10 users require.

Then, we utilized third-party review websites to help eliminate services that have consistently received negative reviews from past and current customers.

Finally, we’ve taken the services remaining on our list after previous eliminations and compared them against each other using five criteria that are important when considering a VPN service.

Those criteria are:

Price – Pricing often determines the level of service you’ll get when you subscribe, but it isn’t always the best determining factor, which is why we’ve compared each service against their pricing.

Setup Process – We want to ensure that our readers can easily connect to the service’s network without fighting with bulky, buggy software in the process.

Ease of Use – We also want to make sure that getting and staying connected to the service’s network is easy and doesn’t require extensive help from their customer support team.

Speed – Nobody wants to deal with a slow internet connection, which is why we’ve put each service on our list through numerous speed tests to ensure they’re fast and reliable.

Customer Service – We’ve also tested the customer support teams that each service provides to ensure they respond quickly and provide helpful responses.

Below are the results we’ve found during our elimination and review process.

VPN Services You Should Avoid

When you are trying to protect your Windows 10 computer, the last thing you want to deal with is a company tracking what you’re doing on the internet.

There is an invasive surveillance program that multiple countries around the world are beginning to participate in, commonly known as “14 Eyes.”

The 14 Eyes program is an agreement between different governments that forces internet service providers in their country to track what their users are doing online.

Any VPN service that is an active participant in this program has been eliminated from our review to ensure your sensitive information and internet activity is anonymous and secure.

VPNs Disqualified Due to Missing Features

As we move through our elimination process, one of the steps we’ll be taking is to eliminate any service that does not provide the features we believe are necessary for Windows 10 users.

Each feature that we’re looking for will be covered, and we’ll explain why we look for that specific feature, then give you examples of services we’ve eliminated for not offering them.

Criteria #1: OpenVPN Support

Every time you connect to an internet service provider or VPN service, they’re going to be using one of any numerous different protocols to manage the connection.

In general, OpenVPN is recognized as one of the safest, more secure and easiest to use protocols, which is why we’ve eliminated services that do not offer it with their service.

AnonVPN and Betternet are two services that do not support OpenVPN that we’ve eliminated from our list of services eligible to receive our recommendation.

Criteria #2: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer

Depending on how you use your computer while you are connected to the internet, you could find yourself consuming large amounts of bandwidth.

Some VPN services will limit access to your account or slow your connection speeds for excessive bandwidth consumption, which is why they’ve been eliminated from our review.

Cloak and Celo are two services with restrictive bandwidth consumption policies that have been removed from our list.

Criteria #3: No Data Logging Policies

VPN services routinely track what you’re doing on their servers so they have logs that they can use to help diagnose problems that you’re having when you contact customer support.

However, these data logging practices put you at risk because some governments can force the services to hand over the logs to them. VPN services that log your activity have been eliminated.

Seed4Me and Hola!VPN are two services that have harsh data logging policies that we’ve eliminated from our list.

Criteria #4: Support for Multiple Operating Systems

Even though you are connecting to the VPN service with your Windows 10 computer, you may want to also protect other devices you own that use different operating systems.

Any VPN service that provides software that isn’t compatible with multiple different operating systems has been eliminated from our list.

IntelliVPN and SunVPN are two services that provide known buggy software with your subscription that we’ve removed from being eligible to receive our recommendation.

Criteria #5: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections

You probably connect to the internet with more devices than your Windows 10 computer or laptop, which means you need a service that supports multiple active connections.

Any service on our list that blocks your ability to connect with multiple devices at the same time, or limits your connection speeds when you do open multiple connections, has been eliminated.

IBVPN and HotVPN are two services we’ve eliminated because they do not allow you to open multiple active connections to their network without becoming slow and unreliable.

Criteria #6: Free Trials, Refunds and Money-Back Guarantee

We understand that some of our readers will take our recommendation and end up having an experience with the service that’s different than what we had.

To ensure you’re not stuck with a service that we’ve recommended, we’ve eliminated any service that does not offer a free-trial period or a money-back guarantee.

VPNBaron and VPN Shield are two services that have been eliminated because they do not guarantee that their subscribers will have a good experience.

Criteria #7No Peer2Peer Blocking

If you spend any time downloading large files on the internet, you may find yourself using Peer2Peer and filesharing services to help speed up the download process.

Any VPN service that blocks access to these services or technologies has been eliminated from our review process to ensure you do not experience issues while downloading files.

IBVPN and HotVPN are two services that will block your access to Peer2Peer and filesharing networks that we’ve eliminated from our review.

Criteria #8No Mandatory SMTP Blocking

Some VPN services will block your access to sending emails while you are connected to their network because spammers have abused this feature in the past.

Any VPN service that blocks your access to sending email and the SMTP port has been eliminated from our review to ensure you do not have to disconnect, send your emails, then reconnect.

TorVPN and Tunnelbear are two services that block your ability to send emails while you’re connected to their network that we’ve eliminated from our review.

VPNs Eliminated Due to Poor Reviews

To help aid our elimination process, we’ve used third-party websites that allow past and current customers to leave reviews of their experience with each service left on our list.

Any VPN service that has consistently received poor and negative reviews from customers has been eliminated to help dwindle down our list of eligible candidates.

Top Three VPNs for Securing Your Windows 10 Device

After working through different elimination processes, we’ve dwindled our original list of 173 services down to a total of three that are eligible for receiving our recommendation.

Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:

  • Price
  • Setup Process
  • Ease of Use
  • Speed
  • Customer Service

After comparing the remaining three services using extensive testing, we’ve found that one service is the clear winner and has received our recommendation as the best VPN for Windows 10 users.

#1 ExpressVPN  (9.5 / 10) – The Best VPN Service for Windows 10

When you want the absolute best VPN service for Windows 10 computers, smartphones and tablets, we have found that ExpressVPN is far ahead of the competition.

We’ve found that ExpressVPN offers relatively competitive pricing even though they’re not the cheapest, which helps them sustain their strong network and excellent customer service.

ExpressVPN offers two primary subscription packages, and charges $12.95 per month for month-to-month subscriptions, and $8.32 per month for 12-month subscriptions.

You can tell that ExpressVPN devotes a significant amount of their revenue to maintaining a strong network with fast, reliable connection speeds and a good customer support team.

While performing speed tests on their network, we’ve found that ExpressVPN ranked #1 during tests performed through servers located in the United Kingdom and the United States.

If you find yourself having problems that we did not encounter, the customer support team at ExpressVPN is helpful and responded to our requests within 60 minutes in most cases.

Even though ExpressVPN ranked at the top of every single one of our tests, there were still occasions we believe ExpressVPN could improve the service they offer.

For instance, while the ExpressVPN support team did respond quickly to our requests, there was one occasion where it took them up to three hours to respond.

We also performed speed tests through servers based in Australia, and found that ExpressVPN ranked #2, suggesting the quality of connection for Australian users could be improved.

Summary: When you want to secure your Windows 10 computer, smartphone or tablet, we’ve found that ExpressVPN offers the best network, customer service team and competitive pricing.

They offer multiple subscription packages with fast, reliable connections, and we didn’t experience many issues while testing their service.

#2 IPVanish  (7.5 / 10)  Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You

Even though we’ve gone to great lengths to ensure ExpressVPN is the best service we can recommend to our readers, we understand that some of our readers may have problems we didn’t have.

For times like those, and if you find out ExpressVPN isn’t available for you, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative for protecting your Windows 10 computer, smartphone or tablet.

IPVanish offers a couple of different subscriptions with some of the lowest prices we’ve seen. For month-to-month subscriptions, they charge $7.50, and only $4.87 for 12-month subscriptions.

They provide software that did not cause any issues with the Windows 10 computers we tested it on, and we used it to connect to their network within a few minutes.

We contacted the IPVanish customer support team and, while they were helpful, we did wait up to three hours for a response to most of the requests we submitted.

During speed tests, we’ve found that IPVanish ranked #2 during tests performed through servers located in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Even though IPVanish performed well in most of the tests we ran, there were areas that we believe could be improved to help them rank higher.

For instance, on one occasion where we submitted a request to their customer support team, we were forced to wait more than 24 hours for a response.

During speed tests performed through servers located in Australia, IPVanish ranked #3, suggesting substantial room for improvement.

Summary: We’ve found that ExpressVPN is the best VPN service currently available for Windows 10 users, but understand they may not be available for every one of our readers.

For occasions where ExpressVPN isn’t available for you, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative for protecting your Windows 10 computer, tablet or smartphone.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10)  Not Recommended

HideMyAss may have landed in the third spot, but that does not necessarily mean we are recommending them to our readers as a viable VPN service.

When testing the HideMyAss service, we experienced significant problems that began early in the review process and continued throughout the entire time we were a subscriber.

Once we subscribed the HideMyAss service, we downloaded and installed the software they provide, and didn’t experience any issues using it to connect to their network.

However, once we were connected to their network, the problems that would persist throughout our entire review process started happening.

HideMyAss is one of the most expensive VPN services currently available, charging $9.29 per month for 12-month subscriptions and $16.99 per month for monthly subscriptions.

We also found that HideMyAss ranked at the bottom of our list during speed tests, giving us slow and unreliable connections that made it difficult to achieve accurate results.

While attempting to contact their customer support team for help with the problems we were experiencing, we waited more than 24 hours to receive a response.

Summary: If you are trying to secure your Windows 10 computer, laptop or smartphone, there are far better services available than what HideMyAss offers.

During an extended testing process, we have found that ExpressVPN offers the best value-based pricing, strongest network and most responsive customer support team.
